Every player always has a life-changing moment. Over the span of over 17 years as a professional, my journey in football had been filled with ups and downs, but this particular event stands out as a true game-changer.
In the past, I received several call-ups to the national team Harambee Stars, but I never made it to the final squad. However, the Migingo Derby (2011) changed everything. We were hosting our noisy neighbors Uganda Cranes at Nyayo National Stadium, and despite receiving the call-up, I wasn’t expecting to be in the matchday squad either, as I was often benched.
However, during that particular time, Coach Jacob Ghost Mulei, a mentor and renowned sports legend, had other plans for me. I remember while we were training, one evening before the match, Coach Mulei called me and asked a simple question, “Are you ready?”
As a dedicated soldier on the football field, I replied with confidence that I was indeed ready. His response was one that I will always hold dear, “You will be playing tomorrow. I trust in you, and that is why I have given you this opportunity. Go and have enough rest for tomorrow, and I want you to do one thing; defend well.”
That night, I held a prayer, seeking the heavens’ support. The next day, I took to the field with determination and played my heart out. We managed to keep a clean sheet during the match, and my performance was nothing short of incredible. From that moment on, my football career took a new trajectory, and the rest, as they say, became history.
The Migingo Derby was a turning point in my life. It taught me valuable lessons that I carry with me today as a former player, coach, and currently serving in a capacity as the President of the Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA), an independent union dedicated to championing the rights and welfare of professional football players.
One of the most crucial lessons I learned is the importance of patience and perseverance. As a footballer, you may face times when you desire to play regularly, but circumstances don’t always align. However, if you know what you want and remain patient, opportunities will present themselves and you will have the chance to prove yourself.
Another significant event that reinforced this lesson occurred while I was working under my mentor, renowned Coach Robert Matano ‘The Lion’. I had suffered a shoulder injury just before our scheduled match (Sofapaka) against Chemilil at Nyayo National Stadium. Coach Matano asked me to be with the team to provide morale support as the captain despite my injury, and I did my best to encourage my teammates.
On the matchday, however, Matano had me in the starting lineup. The team doctor wrapped me up with bandages because it was a shoulder injury and I could play (But try avoiding contact). Therefore during the game, I was releasing the ball early so as not to be touched by opponents or avoid a collision, thus playing simple passes.
We won the game and surprisingly after, I received a call-up to the national team. Apparently, the then coach Antoine Hey was watching that match over the weekend and was impressed by my dedicated performance. Out of adversity came an opportunity, since I received a call-up to the national team.
These valuable experiences made me learn that a coach’s role goes beyond just tactics and strategies; it’s about being close to the players and understanding their journey. A footballer is akin to a soldier, always ready to step up when called upon. As a coach currently, I strive to build strong relationships with my players, guiding and supporting them through their careers.
Looking back, I am grateful for the moments of challenge and triumph, and I owe a debt of gratitude to Coach Jacob Ghost Mulei for giving me that first opportunity. His belief in me was a catalyst for my success, and I will forever carry his lessons and mentorship in my heart.
In conclusion, my journey as a professional footballer has taught me the value of patience, dedication, and always giving my best. As a former player, coach, and President of KEFWA, I pass on these invaluable lessons to the younger generation, ensuring that they too may find success and fulfillment in their football careers.
Football is not just a sport; it’s a journey of resilience and passion. I am honored to have experienced it to the fullest.
